76ers Lure Stefanski: Change in The Air

East Rutherford, NJ, Dec. 4 — Christmas came early for former Nets\’ GM Ed Stefanski. After nine fruitful years with the New Jersey Nets organization seving as everything from Scout to GM, he now gets to serve as the President and GM of the rival Philadelphia 76ers – a boyhood dream that just came true!

A Philadelphia native (still residing there) who once played under future NBA Coach Chuck Daly at Penn … And who was ultimately drafted by the 76ers in the tenth round [yes, the draft lasted that long once upon a time], he now gets a coveted chance to oversee that same professional team that he\’s always loved – the Philadelphia 76ers.*

For what it\’s worth, Ed Stefanski once took his alma-mater, Monsignor Bonner High School, to the Philadelphia Catholic League Championships as a coach. Obviously the 76ers hope he can approximate that same success in Philly while serving as the President and GM.

Gone are former 76ers\’ President and GM Billy King and some of his staff. Also, former 76ers\’ Coach, Larry Brown, who is a Special Advisor to the team, and close confidante of Billy King, may be on the bubble as well.

The 76ers have some talent in SF Thaddeus Young, C Samuel Dalembert, PF Jason Smith and SF Andre Igoudala, to mention a few. It shouldn\’t be too hard for Stefanski to make impact early and turn that franchise around.

Stefanski has had a good record of drafting personnel and engineering trades for New Jersey. He brought in the likes of Kenyon Martin, Nenad Krstic, Richard Jefferson and Sean Williams. He was instrumental at helping bring aboard franchise-rejuvenating players like Vince Carter.

I think many in the organization are sorry to see him go, but wish him well. Fans that enjoyed the finals appearances and other postseason successes in the Meadowlands have indicated that they feel the same.

Now, does this sudden turn of events mean that more change will be in the air for New Jersey? Only time will tell!

In the meantime, Nets President Rod Thorn will \’roll up his sleeves\’ for double-duty until he can find a suitable replacement! Any volunteers?
