Vandeweghe Won\’t Be Renewed

In what initially appears to be a cost-cutting move, but could also be a front-office chemistry one, General Manager Kiki Vandeweghe\’s contract won\’t be renewed once it expires at the end of June. Instead, President Rod Thorn will assume double-duty as the President and GM of the team.*

Reports are now circulating in the press that new owner Mikhail Prokhorov didn\’t personally inform Mr. Vandeweghe of his decision, but rather Kiki found out about it from media sources. The decision was made simply to let Kiki\’s contract expire without renewal and to wish him luck!

Kiki Vandeweghe did an admirable job in difficult circumstances working with Rod Thorn to reshape the roster and bring about flexibility. As a direct result, the roster was overhauled in a manner to bring in youthful talent and the Nets find themselves in enviable position to compete for free agents with the flexibility to turn things around in a hurry.
